shorts for curvy legs

We are fast approaching a time of year that we affectionately refer to as “hades” here in the South.  Which also means that it’s time for one of my most dreaded and feared wardrobe staples.

But Sherri, how can something you dread wearing be a wardrobe staple?” you ask.  Well, because it’s a little awkward to be the girl wearing jeans when it’s 100 degrees.

(And I know, because of the way my husband told me, babe, it’s a little awkward to be the girl wearing jeans when it’s 100 degrees.”)

So, today, I’m NOT talking to those of you who frolic around in shorty-shorts and miniskirts, with nary an ounce of cellulite anywhere.  In fact, I may or may not be throwing major shade at you right now.

Today, I’m talking to those of us with curvy legs.  And as someone whose waist wears a different clothing size than her thighs do, I am including myself in the Curvy Legs Club.  I’m actually electing myself President.  And as President of this club, it’s my duty to fill you in on my two most important rules for finding a flattering pair of shorts, so you can show off those awesome curvy legs to perfection.

(I’m also working on coming up with t-shirts and a secret handshake.)

1.  FORGET about your “normal” size.

Ladies, I know it’s completely and totally against our shopping instincts to size up.  In fact, I’m sure some of us have avoided buying an item simply because we felt offended by the number on the tag.  But, y’all.  It is a-okay to size up in shorts.  It’s actually a good idea.  Because when your waist is a smaller size than your thighs, going with your waist size will probably mean that the legs are too tight.  And too tight in the legs = not a good look.  On anyone.

*Since all rules have an exception, here it is:  if you’re looking at a slouchy/boyfriend style, go with your regular size.  The angels who designed these shorts have already included some extra room in the legs.

2.  For the love, wear your shorts with a heel!

Y’all.   I love and adore a flat shoe.  I am almost NEVER in heels, because I am all about comfort.  But when rocking some shorts, a heel (at least a small one) is a must.  Your legs will look longer and leaner, and those quads are going to pop.  In the best way possible.

*Exception:  Nope. No exceptions.  Wear some heels.

Since I’ve been on the shorts hunt in a major way for the last two weeks of humidity and 80+ temps, I wanted to share a few of my faves:

Y’all.  Pull-on shorts?? As in, elastic waistband?

Why, yes.  Yes, I will.

I am a huge, HUGE fan of these denim shorts from Target. (I definitely sized up for a looser fit in the leg.) They are also available in a 5 inch inseam, as well as a boyfriend fit.

Happy “shorting” this summer, ladies.

(Yep. I promise to never say that again.)

Until next time,
