the power of red pants

Let me preface this post by saying that I am not a "red" person and typically never purchase red-colored clothing {since it's simply not a good color on me}, so the fact that I am blogging about a "must-have" wardrobe item that is, in fact, red, is highly unusual! In recent months, I have been obsessed with colored denim. As I have added a few pairs of different color jeans into my own wardrobe, I have been astonished at how they have opened up endless new outfit pairings, mixing with solids, prints, brights and neutrals already in my closet. I found a pair of AG red skinny ankle jeans at Anthropologie for less than half-price on a sale the day after Thanksgiving and decided to take a risk on a pair of red jeans, even though like I have already pointed out, red is not my color.

Within days of owning these red pants, I had mentally created dozens of new outfits, all using peices already in my wardrobe! I now wonder how I lived without a pair of red skinny jeans...and think every woman should own a pair, too!

Here are a few ways I have been wearing my red jeans recently ::

Paired with all neutrals. An ivory short-sleeve sweater {Anthropologie, not current}, brown wooden statement necklace {Stella & Dot, discontinued} and light suede booties {Target, available online here.}

Paired with black and white. For a date night, I paired my red pants with a black and white peplum top {Anthropologie, available here}, my black boyfriend blazer {byGibson, from Nordstrom}, the Stella & Dot Snake Orb Necklace {available here} and leopard-print heels {from Target}.

Paired with animal print. It's no secret that I love leopard print, so that fact that animal print looks fab with red makes me love these pants all the more. I'm pictured here with my daughter, Lily {who just turned 2!}, on Christmas afternoon. {Lily actually owned red jeans before I did. Her's are from Old Navy.} My cardigan is from the Target kids department a few months back {no longer available} and Lily's cardigan is from the J.Crew Crewcuts Factory Outlet {also is no longer available}.

Paired with polka dots and faux-fur. Here I paired my red jeans with a peppy polka-dotted blouse, mixed in a little leopard-print via a skinny belt {J.Crew, last season, butthis one is similar}, and topped it all off with a warm faux-fur vest {Anthropologie, last season}. My bracelets are the Bardot Spiral Bangle and the Luxor Link Bracelet, both byStella & Dot.

Here are a few more ways to pair red pants, inspired by pics from Pinterest ::

Pair with plain white. Add a white tee or blouse paired with a few fab accessories to a pair of red pants and you are good to go anywhere, any time of year!

Paired with Chambray. This is another year-round pairing, just change up the shoes and accessories to fit the season.

I recommend a pair of skinny/straight legged ankle jeans for the most year-round versital styling, but first and foremost, go with a style and cut that best suits you and your body-type. If you choose an ankle-length, remember you can pair them with tall boots in fall/winter and no one will know they are ankle pants!
