music-festival style

Given I just turned the big “4-0” last year and am a mom of two elementary aged kids, I constantly ask myself how I can maintain my sense of cool. Cool not only in keeping my body temperature regulated {hello hormones}, but also fostering my fashion mojo. Yes, even as a stylist, I do regular self-checks so I don’t end up trying to dress like my daughter.
Enter in the funky & famous ACL musical festival {coming up in October} in my hometown of Austin, Texas, where every hipster on the planet congregates.

This is when I start hyperventilating a bit trying to figure out how to avoid a wardrobe malfunction in the Texas heat while trying to remain relevant amongst the festival vibes. After deep breathing in a bag, I remind myself that I don’t have to surrender to all the stereotypes in fashion that often accompany these types of events.  I can instead focus on integrating a few affordable must-haves and age-appropriate trends that will make me feel confident in my own style skin.

Here are my go-to’s to consider when putting together your own music-festival look::

Jen's top ten ACL wardrobe necessities

outfit details {from upper left to right} ::

1. Gap Plaid Shirtdress ::  I adore this style of dress that mimics the fun flannels that are out for fall.  This cotton alternative breathes in the heat. Partner this ditty with either a pair of chuck taylor converse or a grey calf bootie to complete the look. Add any combination of the accessories shown.

2. Topshop’s Floppy Hat :: Coachella attendees were seen last May wearing this popular felt hat. It is particularly fun with shorts, calf booties and a simple layering tank.

3. Micheal Kors Chain Faux Wrap Blouse :: I adore this cobalt color for fall coupled with a pair of breathable skinny jeans and a calf bootie. Add a jean jacket or cardigan if you think the weather might warrant extra layers.

4. Juicy Couture Glasses :: I wear these glasses everyday. They are a great basic that can be worn on any face frame since they are not too oversized.

5. Gap 1969 Dark Wash Skinny Jeans :: Every woman needs an affordable pair of light-weight, stretch skinny jeans in their wardrobe. The mid-rise inseam holds in all the right places and looks fabulous with a simple basic pocket-t and infinity scarf.

6. Elizabeth + James Leather Moto Shorts :: Anything accented with leather is all the rage this season. Even if you aren’t up for these shorts, opt for something that has a hint of leather in detail.  Another look I love are the spanks leather leggings from the local fab’rik boutique partnered with a Pleione style tunic top from Nordstrom.

7. Kendra Scott Karina Feather Earrings :: These versatile, gold feather earrings scream “festival” without having to wear a dream catcher around your neck.

8. Chuck Taylor Converse :: I am ALL about comfort, so if you have to park 5 miles from the venue, these shoes are made for walking. And they are the epitome of timeless cool.

9.  Steve Madden Fringe Crossbody Bag :: Ladies, invest in some fringe. This purse is totally a winner for your closet this season and practical for carrying all your loot. If fringe isn’t your thing on a handbag, look for a this trendy detail on a pair of shoes.

10. Target’s Mossimo Lina Ankle Boot :: Target does it again with fashion forward calf bootie styles. This is a definitely something to prioritize on your shopping list. Partner with dresses, skinny jeans rolled up, or with a skirt and opaque black tights as we move deeper into winter.

Hope these tips send you confidently into the fall and winter season and well as inspire you with great ideas for ACL, or whichever music festival you attend this season!
