Essential Oils 101

Essential oils have been a part of my family and personal health routine for the past three years. Over the years, I have enjoyed learning about and using essential oils to support my family's immune system, protect them from environmental/seasonal stressors, soothe upset tummies, relax and encourage solid sleep, as well as to clean around the house without harmful chemicals.

As I have shared a little about dōTERRA’s Essentials oils on Instastories, I have received so much interest that I felt it necessary to explain why I use them and how to use them. I am excited to share more details about my personal everyday favorites!

Why do I use dōTERRA ?

On every dōTERRA bottle, you will see the letter CPTG. This stands for Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade which, sets these oils apart.  These oils are derived from plants that are grown and harvested in their natural habitat, where they grow best. For example, dōTERRA Lavender comes from Bulgaria and Lemon from Italy. Second, dōTERRA oils are third-party tested and every test available is run on every single batch, ensuring every batch is safe and beneficial...which is SO important if you are taking them internally. dōTERRA is the only oil brand that I feel confident taking internally.  All of dōTERRA’s oils that are safe for internal use are marked with supplement facts on the bottle per FDA regulations.  dōTERRA also utilizes co-impact sourcing, which cuts out the middleman in third world countries and meets the needs of the people in these countries year-round, by providing water, schools, etc. Super cool, and makes me love the mission of this company!

What is the best way to dive into Essential Oils?

Although you can purchase any oils individually, the best value and easiest way to begin is with a starter kit which includes a free wholesale membership.

The Family Essentials and Home Essentials Kits are two of the most popular choices.  (The Family Essentials Kit has all 5ML bottles, and the Home Essentials Kit, pictured above, has *15ML bottles.) I personally started with the Home Essentials Kit because you get more oil and a diffuser, which I use each and every day!

If the Home Essentials Kit is not in your budget then go with the Family Essentials Kit which comes with smaller bottles of the same oils and includes Peppermint and On Guard® Beadlets instead of a diffuser.  Both kits save you a ton money and include a free wholesale membership that I’ll explain at the end!

*Both kits include 10 of the most popular dōTERRA oils:

Lavender • Lemon • Peppermint • Melaleuca • Oregano • Frankincense • Deep Blue® • dōTERRA Breathe® • DigestZen® • dōTERRA On Guard®

*Note: Deep Blue® is 5ML in both kits

Here are a few of my favorites, along with their uses ::

WIth the winter bug season upon us, I am using dōTERRA On Guard® ALL DAY LONG to support our immune systems!! I diffuse this oil blend all around the house each day, roll my kids feet morning and night, and my hubby and I are taking it internally. I am also LOVING the dōTERRA On Guard® Hand Sanitizing Spray and keep it in my car and in my purse.

I love adding a few drops Lemon to my water each day to add flavor and help detox my body! I also take lemon whenever I feel throat discomfort and/or a stuffy nose coming on!

Deep Blue® has been a miracle worker on my sore, tired muscles post-workout! I add a few drops to my favorite body lotion and rub into my neck and back whenever my muscles are tense and sore.  Deep Blue® is also awesome to soothe cramps!

Lavender is soothing. It promotes solid sleep and soothes skin irritations. I love diffusing lavender in my bedroom at night.

How do I place an order?

The best way to order is via a wholesale membership. dōTERRA works much like Costco in that once you get a wholesale membership you can purchase anything at wholesale prices with no strings attached! Most importantly, there are NEVER hidden fees, monthly fees or any pressure to sell anything. You can pay $35 for a wholesale membership or you can get it FREE if you purchase one of the starter kits!

My recommendation for all of you wanting to dive into Essential Oils, is to order a Kit {Home Essentials is my pick for the best deal} and then add the dōTERRA On Guard® Sanitizing Spray and the dōTERRA On Guard® Softgels to support your immune system while the flu-craziness is going around!

To place an order ::
1. Go to my dōTERRA website
2. Click on "Join and Save" at the top.
3. Scroll down and click the green "Join" button. Be sure my referral number 1302384 is in the box.
4. Choose your country
5. Enter your info.
6. Choose your kit and any additional items you would like to add.
7. See "what's next" below, to join my private Facebook group and to register for Oil Camp.

A few other FAQ's ::

Am I obligated to make a monthly oil purchase? NO.

100 Days of Sunshine

Happy Wednesday, friends!

I am excited to team up with family's favorite brand of fruit, Cuties, today! If you aren't yet familiar with Cuties, then I am thrilled to introduce you to this amazing little citrus fruit. These little clementines are sweet, seedless and, best of all, they are easy to peel. This is the one and only fruit my family ALL enjoys and we keep our fruit bowl stocked with Cuties all season long. As a mama, I am always happy to see my kids reaching for fruit, especially citrus jam packed with sunshine and vitamin-C!

Because Cuties are so delicious and kid-friendly, they are our go-to fruit to pack for picnics, play dates and school lunches. Whenever we head out for a play date at the park, I like to pack an entire bag of Cuties, so there are plenty to share with friends. Cuties never fail to be a crowd pleaser! My kids also love making shapes and fun "food art" with Cuties, providing some entertainment and creativity as they eat healthy!

I love that Cuties is helping bring recognition to Random Acts of Kindness Day coming up on February 16th. Whether it’s volunteering at a food bank or shelter, giving a
care package to someone in need, or simply helping a stranger with a small task, this is the perfect opportunity to include your kids and loved ones in giving the gift of
random acts of love and service. Of course, surprising someone with a bag full of Cuties is always a great way to show kindness!

Be sure to pick up some Cuties next time you are at your local grocery store, and enjoy spreading the sweetness and sunshine!

Three Smoothie Recipes for the Busy Gal

Happy Tuesday, friends!

When I asked for input regarding content for the New Year, you all overwhelmingly replied that you want to see more health/wellness, fitness and healthy-eating tips here on the blog. And I LOVE that! As a busy mama on the go, I am always looking for simple ways to incorporate healthier, cleaner living into my life and my family.

Several of you specifically asked for easy, healthy smoothie recipes, and I immediately knew who I had to ask to do a guest post :: my long time friend, Brooke Brennan, who in my opinion is the "Smoothie Queen."

Brooke and I were good friends in high school, then lost touch in college and reconnected a few years ago over Instagram! Before we dive into the delicious recipes, here's a little about Brooke, and then I will let her take it away!

As a wife, mother of two and owner of her own Health Coaching business, Brooke knows firsthand the challenges of maintaining a balanced, healthy lifestyle for herself and her family. She understands the juggle, the hustle and the stress of making it all come together every day. And, she has learned that you can't do it alone. As a Certified Health Coach and member of AADP and AHHA, Brooke has dedicated her life to offering practical support, accountability and coaching to women, men, families and businesses on a journey towards optimal health. Head over to Brooke's website & blog here and be sure to follow her on Instagram, too!

The new year is such a great time to set intentions for adding healthy routines into your life. One way that I have found to stay on track (and that I coach clients to do, too!) is to start the day off on a healthy note. So often, one healthy routine will lead to another!

A fast and easy way to do that is to start the day off with a smoothie. They are the perfect way to pack lots of nutrients, protein, fats and flavor into an on-the-go cup and sipped all morning long. Or, for us, in the school drop off line!

Most smoothie recipes can even be made the night before so you can literally just grab it and go!

There are so many different ways to create smoothies for any taste- the three recipes below are perfect for the entire family. I will make big batches of these for my husband and our little one’s Evan (7) and Edie (4) before work and school. The morning flow is just so peaceful when breakfast is easy like this.

Each of the recipes below makes one large or two small smoothies. All you have to do is blend the ingredients in a high-speed blender for about 2-3 minutes and you are ready to sip!

·      1 frozen banana

·      ½ cup frozen, riced cauliflower

·      1 small summer squash, ends trimmed

·      1 scoop of vanilla protein

·      1 teaspoon almond or cashew butter

·      splash of pure vanilla

·      ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon

 The Green One

·      1 ½ cup unsweetened nut milk

·      2 big handfuls of spinach

·      ½ cup frozen, riced cauliflower

·      ½ cup frozen mango

·      ¼ cup frozen peaches

·      ½ a frozen banana

·      1 scoop of vanilla protein

·      2 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

·      splash of pure vanilla

Screen Shot 2018-01-29 at 11.22.29 PM.png

Almond Butter Cup

·      1 ½ cups unsweetened nut milk

·      1 frozen banana

·      1 tablespoon almond butter

·      1 scoop vanilla protein

·      1 tablespoon cacao or cocoa powder (unsweetened)

·      1 medjool date, pitted

·      splash of vanilla

·      pinch of salt

·      big handful of ice

Here are a few things that we always keep on hand to make delicious smoothies:

·      Really good vanilla protein.

o   Find one that fits your price point and your nutritional goals. They are lots of plant based and whey options out there.

o   I recommend Vital Proteins, Ka’chava Tribe, Perfect Fit by Tone It Up

·      Raw cacao powder to create any chocolate smoothie (you don’t need to buy chocolate protein, too. This is a money saver!)

·      Natural sweeteners: medjool dates, raw honey or maple syrup.

·      Nut butters. Adding fats to your smoothie will help you to stay satisfied for longer. I always opt for unsweetened butters where the only ingredient is the nut!

·      Stock your freezer with goodies: bananas, berries, coconut meat, a’cai, mango, pineapple, avocado and riced cauliflower are all great things to keep on hand.

o   Cauliflower goes undetected in a smoothie but adds great thickness and a serving of veggies! Give it a try, I promise you won’t know it is there!

o   I made the mistake early on of freezing my banana with peels on and had to wrestle and fight them out- save yourself the step and peel them before you freeze them.

·      Unsweetened nut milk. My favorites are New Barn and Califia Farms.

Let your smoothie creations be a time for play and fun! Food should fuel you, be delicious and most importantly make you smile! Enjoy making these smoothies for yourself or for the one’s that you love. If you have any questions about healthy smoothies or getting healthy this year don’t hesitate to reach out!
